Greek films come to London

Greek films take center stage for another year in London when the 5th London Greek Film Festival opens its curtains to the London cinema lovers. This year the festival will be held from the 8 to 18 October. During that time, more than 45 films will be screened at the Westbourne Studios (242 Acklam Road, London W10 5JJ) close to Portobello in west London. This year’s films include feature fiction films, documentaries, short films, experimental films and video art. Selected short and feature scripts will also be presented.
During the festival the spectators can also attend on 13 October an open workshop entitled ‘Greek Film Network: an opportunity for film business networking from the London Greek Film Festival’. On 14 October Mythopolis will host a party with the very best of Greek music.
The festival will draw to an end on 18 October with the ‘Odysseus Awards’ evening ceremony, where the best films of the festival in each category will be presented with their prizes. The awards ceremony will be followed by a closing party at the Mythopolis music scene (277 City Road, London EC1V 1LA) with the all female group Nefeles.

See you there!

London welcomes world cinema festival

The biggest celebration of cinema has rolled into town again this year. For the next ten days the biggest names in movies will descend to Leicester Square and other venues to promote their new films in this annual festival. Highlights and early Oscar contenders include Argo (directed by Ben Affleck), Rust and Bone (the return of Jacques Audiard with the magnificent Marion Cotillard) and indie favourites like Celeste and Jesse Forever.

Home-grown British talent will be celebrated with the premiere of Great Expectations among others, featuring superb performances by Ralph Fiennes as Magwitch and Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham.

Of course, don’t miss the new wave of Greek cinema, a force to be reckoned with in recent years. Following appearances at festivals around the world, the films that will be shown in London are “Boy Eating the Bird’s Food” by Ektoras Lygizos, “The Capsule” by festival favourite Athina Rachel Tsangari and “Exit K1” by Janis Rafailidou.

Stay tuned for up-to-date reviews and reactions from the red carpet!

Where to live in London: a guide

So, you have just arrived in London, the university halls are full and you are wondering which area is the cheapest to live in. Don’t worry, we are here to help! First of all, you have to be prepared to share your flat with other people as this is one rite of passage you don’t want to miss. Who knows? These people might end up being your best friends for life!
One of the more affordable and up-and-coming areas in London is Stoke Newington, ideally located in Zone 2 and served by numerous buses and the Overground and close to cool areas Dalston and Highbury. The attraction of Stoke Newington is its bohemian character which you can explore on Church Street’s funky shops, cafes and boutiques.
In recent years Stoke Newington has been transformed from a derelict, dreary and ordinary typical inner city area into the glitzy, trendy urban destination of today. Still, Stoke Newington retains most of its Hackney identity and edge but is becoming more and more popular with lots of young professionals moving there.
Another area which is a favourite among students and young professionals is trendy New Cross. Conveniently located in South East London’s Zone 2, the area is served by the Overground, the hipsters’ new favourite means of transport. It is mainly populated by creative types, usually art students from Goldsmiths.
New Cross has emerged as a surprise contender and it has reclaimed its place in our list of cheap areas to live in, especially after trendy Hackney stole all the limelight. It has finally shed its rough reputation and has emerged as an important spot in the clubbing scene with venues like the Amersham Arms.
It also boasts wide leafy streets, Victorian houses, funky bars, little quirky shops and a proximity to great areas, like Greenwich, Blackheath and Lewisham with its famous market. Despite appearances, New Cross is a safe area with a good vibe and is more or less one of the few affordable places to live in London as a student. It will definitely charm you with its sense of community and buzzing nightlife. So wherever you choose to go, make sure that you enjoy your time there!
